What’s Shaping You Today?

This morning I ate a muffin.

That probably doesn't sound remarkable, except I honestly can't remember the last time I had one. It's not because I don't like muffins. I do.

Over the past few years, I've naturally gravitated toward higher-protein breakfasts because I've noticed I feel better when I eat them. I stay satisfied longer, have steadier energy, and enjoy how my body feels. It hasn't been about following rules. It's just become the choice that usually serves me best.

But this morning was different. I took a friend out for coffee to celebrate her birthday. She follows a gluten-free diet and chose a local coffee shop known for its gluten-free muffins. It was her birthday. She ordered a muffin. So I ordered one too. Not because I suddenly forgot everything I know about nutrition. Not because my habits disappeared overnight, but because celebrating her mattered more than optimizing my breakfast.

As I walked home, I realized something. Whether we notice it or not, something is always shaping us. Our choices simply reveal what’s been influencing us all along. Sometimes it's our goals. Sometimes it's our relationships. Sometimes it's convenience, culture, stress, curiosity, or simply the environment we're in.

We spend a lot of time thinking about our habits. How can I eat better? Exercise more? Be more productive? Be more present? Those are worthwhile questions.

But there's another question that deserves more of our attention. What is shaping me today?

Every day we're shaped by countless influences, both obvious and subtle.

  • The food we eat.

  • The books we read.

  • The podcasts playing in the background.

  • The people we spend time with.

  • The conversations that linger.

  • The news we consume.

  • The creators we follow.

  • The routines we repeat.

  • The places we visit.

  • The time we spend outside.

  • The stories we tell ourselves.

None of these seems particularly significant on its own. But together, they become the current that gently shapes our thinking, our decisions, and ultimately who we're becoming.

The encouraging part is that not all influences pull us away from the life we want. Many move us toward it.

  • A thoughtful conversation.

  • A walk through the neighborhood.

  • A meal shared with friends.

  • A novel that expands our perspective.

  • Travel that introduces us to a different way of living.

  • An afternoon in the garden.

  • Time in nature.

  • A mentor who asks a better question.

These shape us, too.

Living well isn't about controlling every decision we make. It's about paying attention to what's influencing those decisions in the first place.

Because awareness gives us choice. Not every influence deserves equal access to our attention. And not every day needs to be optimized.

Sometimes the thing shaping us is love. Or generosity. Or celebration. Like a birthday muffin shared over coffee with a friend.

Perhaps one of the simplest daily reflections isn't asking whether we made all the "right" choices.

Perhaps it's asking:

What shaped me today?

What am I allowing to shape me tomorrow?

Is it helping me become the person I hope to be?
